Nursing homes in Tampa, FL are required to provide residents with a safe and hazard-free environment to ensure their safety and health is never put in jeopardy. But as the years have gone on, we have learned that many homes are allowing their residents to live in substandard conditions while exposing them to abuse, neglect, and mistreatment. Although many nursing homes are cited for their failure to comply with federal standards, they are still open and servicing the aging population in Tampa, FL.
Seven Nursing Homes in the Tampa Bay Area Included on “Secret List” of More Than 400 Nursing Homes with Ongoing Health, Safety, or Sanitary Problems
WhenU.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) requested information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services after a March hearing of the Senate Finance Committee was held, they “heard from witnesses about issues with Medicare’s flawed nursing home rating system called “Nursing Home Compare” [Source: ABC Action News]. They also learned “that there was a list that was not [made] available to the public naming nursing home facilities with persistent records of poor care.”
The news source said there were 488 nursing homes on the list, seven of which are located in the Tampa Bay area. These homes were “candidates for the “Special Focus Facilities” program, which provides more government oversight, including more frequent inspections and progressive fines.” New facilities can only be added to the list when space permits. In the meantime, those that are included on the list are the ones that are “systematically having problems with government surveys.”
While the list should have been made public for individuals to see, it wasn’t.
If you’re wondering which facilities in the Tampa Bay area were included on this “secret list,” here are six of them:
- Bristol at Tampa on East Fletcher Avenue
- Brighton Gardens on North Dale Mabry Highway
- Excel Care Center on Camps Hill Drive
- Hawthorn Health and Beneva Lakes in Sarasota
- North Rehabilitation Center in St. Petersburg
- Oak Haven Rehabilitation Center in Auburndale
How to Avoid Placing Your Loved One in a Nursing Home that Could Put Their Health and Safety at Risk
Because we know that there are nursing homes that aren’t in compliance with state/federal standards and continue to provide residents with substandard care, it is important that you take your time as you search for a home for them to move into. A nursing home is supposed to be a safe and comfortable space for your family member, not a place that increases their chances of being harmed or mistreated. To ensure you choose the best nursing home for your relative, it is recommended that you research the various homes in the area you are interested in, read online reviews, and take facility tours. You can also use Medicare’s online nursing home compare tool to find out if a home you are considering has had any violations recorded in the past.
