Governor DeSantis promised to keep special focus on nursing homes in the state of Florida during the pandemic, as conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and other long term health problems that are common among the elderly can devastate populations in nursing homes. Over 500 people had died in Palm Beach County alone since the pandemic started, and several of those fatalities happened to the elderly in nursing homes.
While the governor assured residents of the state that many of the new infections were being found in people in their 20s and 30s who were not very sick or totally asymptomatic, doctors said during the same conference that young people infecting their parents and grandparents could have very serious consequences. One of the doctors present strongly urged young people to wear masks, social distance, and take other precautions seriously.
More infections and deaths are still being reported locally
In Palm Beach County, the number of new cases had slowed slightly from the prior week, but an additional 406 cases were added to bring the total over 17,000. One additional person died from the virus in the county in that same timespan. In nearby Miami Dade County, the mayor had already ordered additional closures of gyms and restaurants along with imposing a mandatory curfew to try to stop the spread of the virus just weeks after many of these businesses had opened for the first time in almost three months. Virus related hospitalizations had also been increasing all over the state.
The only good news for south Florida was that Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties are now a lower percentage of the total cases in the state, as a majority of Florida’s infections are now outside of the Miami metro area.
Taking legal action against a nursing home or assisted living facility
Whenever someone becomes seriously ill or dies within the confines of a nursing home, the facility is ultimately responsible for how the situation was handled. If the staff or administration was negligent in their duties, or allowed abuse or exploitation of their patients to occur, they can be made to answer for these actions in court. The victim’s family may receive a large amount of compensation for a wrongful death or injury.
