visiting nursing homeLos Angeles, CA- Two Orange County nursing homes, owned by Meridian Management Services, are facing wrongful deaths suits after two men died in the facilities.

One of the suits alleges that neglect Spring Valley Post-Acute facility in Victorville led to the death of a 76-year-old resident. According to the suit, staff at the facility gave Herman Love the wrong medication and allowed a pressure sore on his tailbone to go untreated, which ultimately lead to the man’s death.

According to the suit, if Love became combative, staff at the facility would give him medication as a means of chemical restraint. A weak Love was unable to move on his own and relied on staff for his mobility and eventually developed bedsores because he wasn’t moved regularly.

The OC Register reports that just a few weeks after entering Spring Valley, Love’s doctor urged his family to take him out of the facility. Just one day after he was taken out, Love died.

The other lawsuit also alleges neglect at another Meridian Management Services-owned facility. According to the allegations, 69-year-old Keith Anderson, who was paralyzed on his left side, was not moved often enough to prevent him from developing bedsores. According to the OC Register, Anderson’s doctor said the elderly man’s bedsores were the worst they had seen.

On another occasion, a staff member ripped out the resident’s catheter, causing him to develop a urinary tract infection. Between bedsores and the urinary tract infection, Anderson developed sepsis and pneumonia which eventually led to his death.

It so hard for most people to understand how prevalent neglect is in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. But it happens to an alarming degree and the people who need one-on-one care the most—the elderly—are the ones who are most often the target of abuse and neglect in long-term care facilities. It so hard to understand how someone could target a vulnerable elderly person and cause them to suffer. Fortunately, victims of elder abuse and neglect can pursue an abuser and their facility for financial compensation.
